Let's look south to solve daily traffic woes: PAS Youth

Harakahdaily, 03 February 2012

Feb 3: Spending hours in the snarling traffic of Kuala Lumpur roads is affecting the people's productivity, says PAS Youth, who urged the government to seriously address the problem by among others emulating Singapore's public transportation solution.

“This is so that people no longer need to use their own vehicles to get to work. That is what the people have been waiting for,” said PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hasan.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT NIRVANA? ... Singapore's public transportation system has been touted as among the best in the world

"Imagine everyday, an hour or two being wasted on the road due to traffic congestion, how much time is wasted by the population just to get to-and-fro work. This is unproductive,” he said, lamenting the city's notorious traffic jams.

Without proper public transportation in place, Nasrudin said there was nothing much that city residents could do other than wasting their lives away on the road every day.

Nasrudin recalled the government’s promise to improve public transportation from the money saved through the petrol and gas price rationalisation programme.

“It’s unfortunate that the promise has not been fulfilled. We know that the allocation for this public service is there and is huge. Sadly, it has failed to achieve the objective,” he added.

While recognising the efforts to reduce city traffic congestion by having the LRT (light-rail transit) system, Nasrudin said weaknesses in the public transportation could not provide an alternative to the 'sardine-packed' LRT trains.

“People have to wait long for (public) buses and waste so much of their time,” he said.
